À près de 60 ans, le musicien sénégalais accède à la notoriété internationale et chantera lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture du Mondial 2010, en Afrique du Sud. Ce natif de Malika qui est récemment revenu vivre au bercail va célébrer ses quarante années de présence sur la scène musicale avant la fin de l’année. Retour sur un parcours plus qu’honorable d’un doyen de la musique au Sénégal.

Moins d’une année après avoir assuré la direction artistique du Marathon musical de la mairie de Dakar, un concert géant qui a réuni les cinquante meilleurs musiciens du pays, le 29 novembre 2008, qu’il s’apprête à fêter avec faste l’anniversaire de ces quarante années de pratique musicale. A la fin de l’année dernière il a eu à travailler sur  deux morceaux qui figureront sur l’album que Carlos Santana, le célèbre guitariste mexicano-américain, créateur de l’immortel Black Magic Woman, doit enregistrer l’an prochain aux États-Unis. Depuis qu’ils se sont rencontrés, en 2001, les deux hommes ne se quittent plus et ont joué ensemble sur les plus prestigieuses scènes, de l’O2 Arena (à Londres) à Carnegie Hall (à New York), en passant par le Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy. Idrissa Diop a participé à des dizaines de rendez-vous musicaux et sorti huit albums: Missaal, Femme noire, Rebelle, ­Tribal ­Poursuite, Conscience collective, Expérience, Historia, mais aussi et surtout, Yakar, qui est à l’origine de sa rencontre avec Santana. Né en 1949, Idrissa a attrapé très tôt le virus musical. « Petit, déjà, je tapais à longueur de journée sur des cartons ou des gourdes vides », se souvient-il. Il a 8 ans quand son grand-père maternel lui offre son premier djembé. Le bambin est ravi, ses parents beaucoup moins. Apres son retour au bercail il a mis sur pied son orchestre du nom d’Identity Band et qui regroupe de jeunes musiciens de la trempe de Jeannot Mendy et Abdourahmane entre autres. Il fêtera le quarantième anniversaire de son entrée dans la scène musicale le 2 octobre prochain au cours d’une soirée qui regroupera des sommités du monde musical d’ici et d’ailleurs.
